FAQ's

Who is eligible for ODP?

The following age groups are eligible for the 2016-2017 ODP Season: 2000, 2001,  2002, 2003, 2004, & 2005.

What if my son/daughter is a 2004 birth year or younger?

All players born in 2004 (even those that were on the 04 State Pool/State Team) must attend the Open Tryouts in November or December.  It is recommended that all players born in 2004 & 2005 participate in the Elite Player Development Program (EPDP), which will be used to help identify younger players that might possibly be future ODP players.  EPD is for players born in 2004,2005, & 2006 (although we do allow some players born in 2003 to participate)..

How are players selected?

See Overview.

How do I get scouted to be identified for Alabama ODP (2000-2003)?

Alabama Soccer Association utilizes a scouting system in which players are identified in a natural game playing environment for identification. The process starts with a player recommendation from the club Director of Coaching, club coach, and/or opposing club coach. Players will be evaluated in the fall, primarily in league play (State, Regional) and State Cup competitions.  For players 2004 or younger, the EPDP can serve as a method to be identified.

What if my son/daughter is invited to the State Pool but is unable to attend the first scheduled event?

On occasion players will have conflicts.  Alabama Soccer Association understands that conflicts will arise.  Players must register and attend at least one session to be considered for the State Team.  The State Pool for 00-03 will train from September-December so players will have many opportunities to train and showcase their skills for the ODP system.

How many players are named to the State Team?

For each age group; typically, one team of 20 is named plus alternates.  However, the Technical Director reserves the right to form a 2nd team, or a 'Y State Team' that consists of players born in the latter part of the ODP season (July-December) to continue to develop them via training and some matches.  This number could vary between age groups and is based on the quality of the overall pool.

Can a player be added to the Program during the year?

An elite player may be added, in the following cases:

  • A player moving into Alabama mid-season.

  • An injury preventing him/her in participating during the pool phase.

  • A player identified by State, Regional, National Staff. The State Technical Director along with State Staff in that particular age group will have final approval.

The State Technical Director reserves the right to add or release players at any time.

How does the Registration Process work?

Registration is done online through GotSoccer.  Players born in 2000-2003 that have been scouted/recommended will receive an email invitation for the Initial Registration starting on August 13th.

For 00-03 players that were missed by the scouting/recommendation system, or any other players that want to attend the Trials, please visit the ODP Registration Page.  On this page you will find information on events and a link to begin the registration process for the Open Tryouts. This link will go live on August 27th and close on September 1st for the 00-03 Age Groups.  The Open Trials will coincide with the September 5th and October 23rd training dates so that players may be evaluated with and against the State Pool players.

The initial registration fee of $100 covers the administrative fees and 1 Nike training jersey, Nike shorts, and Nike socks.  Players that are new or need to replace the blue and red Nike jerseys will have to purchase them for $25 each.  Once players are invited to the pool and have completed the Initial Registration, you will be sent a confirmation email that You may then go to the ODP Calendar and click on the links for each date to register for the Training Events.

Non-ASA members will need to pay an additional $25 per player to register with USYS (this includes all AYSO and US Club Registrants).

If you are experiencing registration issues, please contact Program Administrator Martha Disko at martha@alsoccer.org or 205-991-9779. Please note: If you were in the program last year, you will still need to register (enroll) your son/daughter for the new year.

Players that attend an open tryout will be notified by the following Wednesday of their status.  If players are invited into the State Pool, then they will receive the link to register for each training event.

*00-03 players will ONLY register for the State Pool if they receive an invitation.

What happens after I complete the Initial Registration for ODP?

After enrolling your son/daughter, it is important that you register for each Training Session or Event that your son/daughter is eligible for by clicking on the links on the ODP Calendar page. You may use your GotSoccer account to register and pay for each event that you plan to attend.  Late registration fee of $15 will be assessed starting one week prior to the event.  It is important to register promptly so that the appropriate number of coaches will be hired to conduct a quality session.

How do we know if a Training Session/Event has been cancelled?

We do our best to communicate cancellation information as early as possible. When a cancellation does occur this information will be on our website under the ODP NEWS page, http://www.alsoccer.org/odp/odp_news/, notifications sent via the RainedOut.com system and/or emailed.

How is the program paid for?

ODP is self-supporting. All expenses (event/training/camp fees, travel), are paid by the players involved. Costs are determined by facilities, hotels, coach fees, entry fees, and other projected items necessary for the upkeep of the program.

Is there any type of financial aid/scholarships available?

There are a limited number of scholarships available, most are partial scholarships.  Scholarships are given on a financial need only basis.  The application form is available on Alabama Soccer Association’s website, under ODP heading – ODP Forms.
