“Of the Year” Award Nominations

Each year, Alabama Soccer Association recognizes outstanding contributions to youth soccer by inviting members to nominate coaches, volunteers, administrators, and referees who have gone above and beyond to grow the game within their communities.

To nominate someone for an award, select the appropriate category below, complete the nomination form, and submit all required supporting materials. We encourage detailed submissions to help showcase the nominee’s impact and accomplishments.

The ASA Selections Committee forwards Alabama nominees to US Youth Soccer for consideration in the National Annual Awards.

As previously announced, USYS no longer hosts an in-person awards banquet in January. To celebrate our national award winners, each winner will receive: an engraved award, recognition through USYS and state association media channels and a commemorative gift delivered to their home.

In Addition, winners may select one of the following:

  1. Equipment grant for their local soccer club totaling $3,500
  2. Four (4) tickets and lodging to an MLS (or lower division) match of choice
  3. A $3,500 donation made in their name to charity of their choice

Ken Headley Commitment to the Game Award

In 2019,  Alabama Soccer Association created the Ken Headley Commitment to the Game Award to honor a man whose impact on the Alabama soccer community continues to inspire players, coaches, and families across the state.

Ken Headley was a long time coach in Alabama garnering a reputation as a servant leader, a coach whom his players loved, and a friend to all who knew him. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2018, Ken demonstrated the same tenacity he instructed in his players by fighting the good fight, maintaining hope in the face diminishing health. Despite not feeling his best, he continued to be on the field coaching when his body allowed him to be.

Although his passing was deeply felt throughout the soccer community, Ken’s legacy lives on through the Ken Headley Commitment to the Game Award and countless lives he influenced both on and off the field.

The award was first created and presented to Ken’s wife, Lynn Headley, in recognition of a life devoted to service, leadership, and the game of soccer.

Ken Headley Commitment to the Game Award Nomination Information
